The Fish & Chippy Opens In Mt. Pleasant

FishMt. Pleasant, SC. The Fish & Chippy opens its doors on Thursday, Sept 8, 2022 at 565 Belle Station Blvd. Serving authentic British fish and chips, local craft beers, and some good ol’ British banter, the Fish & Chippy promises to please homesick Brits and fish-loving Charlestonians alike.

The Fish & Chippy is an unusual partnership between co-owners Galen Le Cheminant, a British expat and champion squash pro, and Babak Bryan, a Yankee transplant and local architect who also designed the restaurant’s rustic gray interiors. With Haitian-born chef Jean Pierre rounding out the picture, the spot is doing takeaway and online orders as well as dine-in for 17.

Alongside its traditionally prepared fish and chips, the menu’s star is “The Queen’s Way” – fish and chips prepared exactly as desired by Her Majesty: breaded and baked fish with a tarragon Hollandaise drizzle. Other specialties include scotch eggs, a battered sausage with chips, Lowcountry-inspired pimento cheese grit fritters, and a Flake 99: vanilla soft-serve on a cone, topped with a Cadbury Flake chocolate bar.

Of the restaurant, Galen says “It sort of went like this, ‘do you know what Mt. P should have, Babak’, ‘what’s that, Galen’, ‘a good ole fish and chip shop’!… ‘yay, I’m in, said Babak’!…after that we talked about all the yummy British foods we could have on offer, we got slightly carried away so we drank more beer thinking how crazy this would be, and after almost 20 months (which should have been 6 months) lots of blood (mainly Galen‘s), sweat, tears and time, we were out the other end, finally.”

“With the help of some very open-minded employees we will provide a first-class Chippy food experience. We’re serving customers the freshest-sourced Icelandic cod, arguably the best cod on the market – as you break open the crispy fried batter, the cod’s meaty white flakes are exposed, and a light coating of salt and vinegar marries so well together when you crunch in to it! Our added gourmet items, from fried mac and cheese balls to a grilled market fish, give the menu a nice added twist.”

The Fish & Chippy is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 9pm, and Sundays 11am to 3pm.
