Montague Ave. eatatbasil.com/north-charleston A long-time staple of the Charleston restaurant scene, Basil opened its Park Circle location in early 2019. Cool, beautiful décor welcomes customers and sets the mood for excellent Thai cuisine. Enjoy specialty cocktails, wines or beers as you decide on your meal. Basil’s soups and salads are delicious ways to start your meal. If you can’t decide, check out the tom yum kong, shrimp hot and sour soup or the som tum, green papaya shrimp salad — you won’t be sorry! In addition to rice- or noodle-based favorites like pad Thai, pad prik and a variety of delicious curries, Basil features specialty entrees like basil duck (a boneless half duck, stir fried with vegetables and basil sauce) or barrumundi with shrimp. Barrumundi, or Asian sea bass, is lightly floured, deep fried and served with vegetables in house ginger sauce. For a fabulous treat, keep in mind that mango sticky rice season is almost upon us, and it’s hard to imagine a more perfect dessert. BY HOLLY VORIES A Taste of ParkCircle P ark Circle in North Charleston has been hip, trendy and cool for a long time. And during all that time, it has never lost its sense of fun. Built along the spokes of a wheel that starts in the center of a roundabout large enough to enclose a park, the area includes several neighborhoods, elementary, middle and high schools, a substantial aquatic center and some very interesting restaurants and bars. East Montague Avenue acts as a second hub, with restaurants and pubs lining the sidewalks and winding away down cross streets. You may have to try a side street, but there’s a lot of parking along Montague and the cross streets.
