Lowcountry Cuisine Summer/Fall 2019

www.LowcountryCuisineMag.com | www.MountPleasantRestaurant.com | www.CharlestonRecipes.com LC 5 I n early June, we had just wrapped up photographing some dishes at Cuoco Pazzo, and I sat with the owner/chef and chatted as photographer Thomas Runion and I took turns devouring bites of the stunning presentations that had been in the spotlight moments earlier. We talked about cooking and his family in Italy and all the things that, for me, bring life to food. I got to thinking how special it is that the Lowcountry has a seemingly endless variety like this at our fork-tips. We are lucky to live in a food-centric dining mecca, and, in this issue, you’ll discover so many facets that celebrate it. Come along with us on a trip to the Hammock Coast, hear from some of the Lowcountry’s own James Beard Award winners, pick your next brunch destination or gain a new perspective of popular rooftop bars. Also, the Taste of Charleston is back! The Lowcountry Cuisine team is proud to sponsor this 36-years-running event that went on hiatus a couple years ago to reimagine and revamp. It seems like there is a festival every weekend these days, but this one has always set itself apart, and I trust this year’s improvements will make it even more distinguished. The most conversation-starting topic I’ve come across since we’ve been putting this issue together: How do you do your ‘cue? I love a good discussion about foods that people have staunch opinions on, and barbecue sauce is one that people hold firmly in their beliefs. Learn more about the history of barbecue, and make sure to check out the sauce map to see where your go-to barbecue sauce is popular. In these pages, you’re sure to find something your heart (or belly) wants: the trendy hot spots, the dives, the decades-old landmark restaurants, the neighborhood favorites and everything in between. It’s the food and the ambiance that transport you to wherever you want to be — and we’re happy to be part of your journey. Cheers!
