Lowcountry Cuisine Summer/Fall 2019

What is this area? Well, it’s “The Neck,” and it’s defined as approximately where Charleston and North Charleston connect near Meeting Street. There’s no doubt this area is seeing booming change, with restaurants and businesses popping up left and right, and I’m here to shout out a handful of my tried-and-true favorites for anyone in this “neck” of the woods. Give any of these a try — you’re in for a treat! HURIYALI Every time I have a guest in town, this is a must-go destination to kick-start our day. With delicious, healthy, local options of all kinds, you really can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu. Choose from smoothies, cold-pressed juices, acai bowls (the chocolate bowl with granola and honey is a personal favorite!), nachos deemed the “healthiest in town,” sandwiches and salads, burritos and more — all with ingredients from local producers. I’ve watched in amazement as moms bring their children in for an after- school juice or smoothie; it’s so good, even kids crave it! If weather permits, bring a book or take your dog to the outdoor seating area. Every time, I feel like I’m walking through a secret garden. With its relaxed vibe, calming green colors, pretty murals and beautiful plants, you’ll be glad you took the time to nourish both your body and mind at Huriyali. Huriyali is located at 401 Huger St., Charleston. LITTLE JACK’S TAVERN The first time I walked into Little Jack’s (and it’s been many a time since then), I had the immediate thought, “This looks like a spot my grandparents could have had a date in.” BY HELEN HARRIS Navigating the Neck Quaint Culinary Offerings in Expanding Charleston Area The OG acai bowl from Huriyali.
